On Friday July 1st, UNITE HERE Local 19 held a delegation to the Santa Clara Hyatt hotel, as part of a national day of action to demand justice for all union and non-union Hyatt workers. As a Summer Organizer at Local 19 in San Jose, I was very excited to see this action happen in my own area. My compañeros Tim and Alondra turned out students, while other organizers brought faith leaders, community members, and union workers.
When the day of the delegation came, we gathered a group of about 50 people to confront the managers at the Hyatt of Santa Clara. The energy among our group was really strong and you could feel the solidarity.
The delegation was lead by a leader from the Interfaith Council, who spoke of the relationship between faith and justice. I had the honor of speaking about student-worker solidarity. Finally a union worker and a non-union Hyatt worker spoke, telling Hyatt all our brothers and sisters deserve a fair process. I was proud that every contingent had a strong presence; you could tell through the loud cheers and chants. Hyatt Santa Clara knows the workers and their community backers are strong, and we won’t be going anywhere soon! Si se puede!
